This toolkit is inspired by the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, but our version is designed for mothers to self-assess their own risk of postpartum depression (PPD). Research shows that at least 10% of women experience PPD, yet many don't receive the support they need. These mothers often manage to care for their baby and handle household responsibilities, but their overall joy in life is significantly diminished, which can have lasting effects on the family. The original Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale was developed to help healthcare professionals identify mothers struggling with PPD, a condition more severe and persistent than the common "baby blues" that can appear in the first week after delivery.
